This sleep tip for your toolbox is especially helpful for those nights where your brain just keeps buzzing. Begin by lying down comfortably. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in and slowly exhale.
Feel the tension begin to leave your body with each breath. Inhale, calm. Exhale. Worry. Now bring your attention gently to your thoughts, especially those that feel restless, intrusive or unwelcome.
Acknowledge each one without judgment. Keep a small pad of paper and a box with a lid beside your bed.
Write down whatever the thoughts are that are running through your head without judgment. Fill as much of the paper as you need to get those buzzing thoughts out of your brain and onto the paper.
Now fold the paper and put it in the box and close the lid. Now lay down and find a comfortable position. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in and slowly exhale.
Feel the tension begin to leave your body with each breath. Inhale, calm. Exhale. Worry. If any of those intrusive thoughts return, acknowledge them without judgment.
Imagine sending them back where they belong on the piece of paper folded inside the box. You don't need to fix or solve any of those problems. Now you are releasing them for the night.
You have set it down and you can return to it if you choose. Take another deep breath in and gently release.
Feel the lightness of letting go and trust that your mind can rest now, knowing those thoughts are safely stored away. Rest and you can sleep.
